Tesla Megapacks Power Ørsted's 250 MW Texas Grid Battery Project

August 6, 2026

Tesla Megapacks Enable Ørsted's Old 300 Storage in ERCOT Market

Tesla Megapacks are now operational at Ørsted's 250 MW/500 MWh Old 300 battery storage project in Needville, Texas, fully connected to the ERCOT grid. The system delivers 250 MW of power for two hours, utilizing Megapacks manufactured at Tesla's Lathrop, California Megafactory.

Each Megapack integrates battery modules, inverters, thermal management, and controls into a single unit, reducing on-site assembly requirements. The current two-hour Megapack configuration provides approximately 1.9 MW of power and 3.85 MWh of storage per unit.

Operational Independence and Grid Services

The BESS operates independently from the adjacent 430 MW Old 300 Solar farm, which has been generating power since 2024. Unlike co-located systems, this battery can charge from and discharge to the broader ERCOT grid, not just the solar farm. This flexibility allows it to provide critical grid services, including voltage and frequency management, particularly vital during periods of high demand and extreme weather in Texas.

  • Project Scale: 250 MW power capacity / 500 MWh energy storage.
  • Economic Impact: Expected to generate $110 million in local property tax revenue for schools, infrastructure, and emergency services.
  • Global Context: Tesla has deployed over 58 GWh of industrial storage systems across more than 65 countries.

Melissa Peterson, President of Ørsted Americas Onshore, stated, "Battery energy storage has played a large role in providing much-needed power to ERCOT in times of tight supply and demand margins." This project marks a significant utility-scale deployment, reinforcing the growing importance of battery storage for grid reliability and integrating with Ørsted's 6 GW US onshore operating portfolio.

Supplier Solution Note

This large-scale grid project demonstrates the critical role of advanced battery systems in energy reliability. For commercial drone operations, reliable power is equally vital. We specialize in custom battery solutions for drones, offering optimized designs and rapid prototyping to meet specific power needs, ensuring operational continuity.
